Antimalarial potential of quinones isolated from plants: an integrative review

Antimalarial treatment is often associated with the resistance developed by Plasmodium which generate ineffective drug treatment. Based on this, search for therapeutic alternatives necessary and urgent. This review intends to assess antimalarial potential of quinones isolated from plants. The scientific articles was carried out CAPES Journal Portal (PPC), Virtual Health Library (VHL), PUBMED, NCBI SCIELO, using following descriptors: antimalarials. Inclusion criteria were adopted based studies about plants tested against falciparum berghei. exclusion mainly that extracts, fractions synthesis obtained other natural products. A total 1344 publications collected screening (PPC = 5, VHL 248, PUBMED 525, 462 SCIELO 94). From this total, 1280 excluded, only 64 selected full reading. All benzoquinones active P. falciparum. Naphthoquinones active, inactive moderately e P Anthraquinones anthrones naphthoquinone 2-acetylnaphtho- [2,3b] -furan-4,9-dione most all molecules Plasmodium. Whereas lapachol studied structural changes do not seem contribute activity. In summary, are promising as antimalarials, however, need in vivo studies.
